Frequently Asked Questions

Who is Alfred Islay Walden?
Alfred Islay Walden was a 19th-century scholar, theologian, and humanitarian. Walden studied at Howard University and graduated from Brunswick Theological Seminary in 1879.   While at New Brunswick Theological Seminary, Walden identified educational and opportunity gaps for Black families and youth in New Brunswick, NJ, and petitioned the Reformed Church of America for assistance in providing resources and support for formerly enslaved communities. Upon graduation from NBTS, Islay Walden continued his advocacy by establishing the Promised Land Church and Academy in Randolph County, NC, providing academic and spiritual resources for historically marginalized youth and families. In 2022, the Randolph County Historic Preservation Commission renamed the original site to Strieby Church, School, and Cemetery Cultural Heritage Site,  and designated it as a literary landmark.

Historian Margo Williams has provided insight into the life of Islay Walden in her publications, From Hill Town to Strieby: Education and the American Missionary Association in the Uwharrie “Back Country” of Randolph County, North Carolinaand Born Missionary: The Islay Walden Story.

Walden's scholarship, research, and humanitarianism are continued through the Isaly Walden Education Alliance, Inc. (IWEA).
